God of War 3 Remastered on Steam Deck and Linux

Use the native gow3-x86_64.AppImage for experimental Linux and Steam Deck support. It needs glibc 2.39 or newer, AVX and Vulkan 1.3, plus your own PS4 game files. If Steam tries to run the AppImage with Proton, the maintainer says to select Steam Linux Runtime instead.

Published 2.4.1 AppImage; 2.3.0/2.4.0 observations retain their version and hardware limits. Steam Deck startup failures after the 15 October Steam-client update remain listed in 2.4.0’s known issues.

Follow the native launch steps, then use the Steam shortcut settings for Gaming Mode.

Run the experimental AppImage

Complete initial file selection where you can access your extracted game folder and a terminal; on Steam Deck, Desktop Mode is a practical place to do that. The same PS4 game-file requirements apply as on Windows.

  1. Download the Linux package

Get gow3-x86_64.AppImage from the maintainer’s 2.4.1 release, rather than the Windows ZIP.

  2. Make the file executable

In the download directory, run chmod +x gow3-x86_64.AppImage.

  3. Start the native launcher

Run ./gow3-x86_64.AppImage. Select the folder containing your compatible PS4 game files. If the update is separate, use Game → Update folder for that extracted update.

  4. Save and launch the game

Save the settings and press PLAY. Confirm the game window, menu and initial gameplay separately; a launcher window alone does not show that game rendering works.

Add the native program to Steam

Close Steam before using Advanced → Add to Steam: Steam rewrites its shortcut file when it exits. The launcher adds a non-Steam shortcut with game art from your own dump. Adding this shortcut does not create an official Steam edition.

If Gaming Mode launches the AppImage through Proton, open the shortcut’s Properties → Compatibility and select Steam Linux Runtime. The AppImage is already a native Linux application. Record any error after this change rather than repeatedly changing unrelated compatibility layers.

Advanced → Linux exposes window-system selection (automatic, Wayland or X11), GameMode and MangoHud. Only tools already installed on the machine can be enabled. Those switches are not evidence of a guaranteed FPS or battery-life result.

Keep Linux data when replacing the package

Linux does not use the Windows built-in updater. Close the game, keep a separate backup of these data directories and download a newer AppImage from the same release history. Retain the previous AppImage for comparison. The save guide explains the title-ID and slot boundaries.

For an old package that reports GLIBC_2.44 not found, the README says to replace it with the rebuilt AppImage requiring glibc 2.39+. That instruction does not call for manually replacing SteamOS system libraries.

Rendering fixes and remaining limits

2.3.0 announces a RADV sparse-queue fix for block corruption on Kratos, the logo and characters; its validation attributes confirmation to a Steam Deck user. That is narrower than saying every Deck issue is fixed. 2.4.0 still lists some startup failures after a Steam-client update, and 2.4.1 inherits those known issues.

The README records gameplay testing on Arch Linux with an RX 7800 XT using RADV/Wayland. The release records launcher/package smoke tests on five distributions. Neither establishes stable FPS, power draw or battery life on a Steam Deck. Include LCD/OLED model, SteamOS version, runtime tag, GPU driver, resolution, engine rate and cache state when reporting your own result.

F12 screenshots, vibration and anisotropic filtering were checked in-game on Windows in 2.3.0; that release explicitly left the new options’ Linux gameplay behavior unverified. See capture limits before relying on identical behavior.
