God of War 3 Remastered PC Updates

On Windows, Advanced → Check for updates downloads and installs a new community-port version while preserving saves and settings. Back up the data first anyway. Linux uses a replacement AppImage rather than the Windows updater. Keep the runtime tag separate from the PS4 game-data version and preserve an older package if you need a controlled rollback comparison.

Start with what to preserve, then use the platform-specific update sequence.

Match the installed tag to a published asset

The launcher version appears in its sidebar; the 2.3.0 release made that display consistent. Compare it with an actual Releases tag and the downloaded platform asset. A main-branch feature or a test-tag screenshot is not proof that your installed ZIP includes it.

2.4.1 is a published release with both ZIP and AppImage assets. Its main changes are the Cinzel Black launcher/button-label font and accented headings; its notes say the in-game button prompts were not checked yet. It inherits 2.4.0’s known issues. Do not present the font update as a confirmed graphics, loading or audio fix.

Preserve the original data and configuration

Close the running game. On the default Windows setup, copy the entire user directory to a separate location. Keep gow3.ini and %APPDATA%\gow3-launcher\settings.json if your rollback comparison needs the original configuration. A custom Saves root requires a copy of that root instead.

Linux defaults are ~/.local/share/gow3 for game data and ~/.config/gow3-launcher for launcher preferences. Retain the prior AppImage separately. Do not store your only backup inside the installation folder you intend to replace. The save-location guide distinguishes slots, metadata, cache and logs.

Update the appropriate platform package

  1. Confirm the backup before changing binaries

Close the game and preserve the data/configuration listed above. Keep a note of the previous runtime tag and package path.

  2. On Windows, use the launcher updater

Open Advanced → Check for updates and follow the download/install flow. The README says saves and settings are kept; keep your independent copy until you verify the result.

  3. On Linux, replace the AppImage separately

Download the intended newer gow3-x86_64.AppImage from Releases. Make the new file executable and run it with the existing data directories. The Windows updater is unavailable on Linux.

  4. Confirm the installed version and saved progress

Check the sidebar version, recognized game folder and Load Game entries. Compare the previously affected scene and keep the new failed log if a regression appears. A launcher smoke test alone does not establish a full game fix.

Rollback is a controlled comparison, not a save downgrade promise

The project keeps older assets in Releases but does not publish a universal automatic rollback procedure for every package/data combination. A cautious comparison uses a separately preserved older package and copies of pre-update data, so the current installation and original saves remain recoverable.

If you return to the previous package, restore the intended configuration and selected Saves root, then check Load Game and the affected scene. Do not repeatedly let different versions rewrite the only copy of your progress. Keep the failed log, old/new tags and one changed condition for a useful regression report.

The port’s 2.x version is independent of the game’s 01.00/01.02 version. A full-01.02 startup exception reported in 2.3.0 does not justify renaming random metadata or assuming a runtime update supplies different game files. Use the crash branches for the exact error.
